Fibroids Q & A

What are fibroids?

Fibroids, or uterine fibroids, are growths that develop in your uterus. Fibroids are very common and almost always benign (noncancerous).

The tumors grow at different rates and may be as small as a pea or as large as a watermelon. You may also have more than one fibroid.

What are the symptoms of fibroids?

Fibroids don’t always cause symptoms. However, if you have large fibroids or multiple fibroids you may experience:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Heavy periods
  • Bleeding in between your periods
  • Low back pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Increase in abdominal girth
  • Constipation

Fibroids may make it harder for you to get pregnant or increase your risk of miscarriage. They may also complicate your pregnancy and delivery.

How are fibroids diagnosed?

The team at Gelen R del Rosario MD Inc may inadvertently find a fibroid during your annual well-woman exam. To diagnose fibroids, they may run various diagnostic tests such as an ultrasound, hysteroscopy, or hysterosalpingography.

The diagnostic tests provide additional information about your fibroids, including location, size, and number. The team at Gelen R del Rosario MD Inc uses this information to determine your treatment plan.

How are fibroids treated?

Gelen R del Rosario MD Inc manages fibroids with medical and surgical approaches. The best method for you depends on the size and location of your fibroids, as well as the severity of your symptoms.

Medical monitoring

If your fibroids are small and you have no symptoms, the team may take a wait-and-see approach. They schedule regular follow-up exams to monitor fibroid growth and symptoms.

Medical management

To manage any symptoms, the team may prescribe medication like hormonal birth control pills or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. Placement of an intrauterine device, which is a long-active reversible contraceptive, may also be recommended.

Surgical management

If your fibroids are large and cause severe symptoms that interfere with your daily life, the women’s health experts at Gelen R del Rosario MD Inc may recommend surgical intervention.

Surgical options include myomectomy (removal of the fibroid) or hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Gelen R del Rosario MD Inc only recommends a hysterectomy if you have no future pregnancy plans.
